Edinburgh treasure trove of rare vinyl from Murrayfield Ice Arena up for auction

A collection of vinyl records found in Edinburgh's Murrayfield Ice Arena are set to go up for auction on Saturday, June 28.

The records are those which were used in the ice rink over the years and with such a wide and varied range of artists and genres, Rosewell based auctioneers, Thomson Roddick Callan auctions hope to bring in £20,000 to £30,000.

David Williamson, who specialises in the music side of the business, told Edinburgh Live: "We got a call in at about August, September last year about cleaning out a Murrayfield Ice Rink collection that they've had for 40 or 50 years. It sort of ranges between the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

"There's a lot of them that are sort of a little bit extra than your normal 12", 10", and 7" singles because they're either DJ pressings or promo copies or white labels, so they're a little bit different than your normal sort of run of the mill 12".

These vinyl aren't actually full records, each one will only have about four tracks on them but David believes that their origins make them extra special.

He continued: "They're special because they were given out to the DJs before they actually went out to the shop, so they're a little bit extra, in terms of, as I said, promo copies, DJ copies, and white labels and stuff, so it it makes them a little bit more sought after."

Top names will be featured in the collection with the likes of The Cure, Eurythmics, Bon Jovi, Oasis and Prince up for grabs. Most of the music would have been played at the rink over the years, but there are promotional vinyl that were sent to Murrayfield that didn't make the cut back then.

David said: "It's got every genre under the sun, so it's got from Heavy rock, heavy metal to punk, yeah, you name it, they've got every genre. It's not just what was played on the rink, even though there is a lot of that, but the collection a bigger, wider range."

The auction will take place at Murrayfield Ice Arena on Saturday, June 28 at 10.30am with the collection available for viewing now.
