What Is Hadrian's Wall?

Hadrian's Wall was a massive defensive fortification built by the Romans across the north of England—not technically in modern-day Scotland, but rather just south of the Scottish border. It marked the northern boundary of the Roman Empire in Britain and was intended to keep out tribes from what is now Scotland, including the Picts.
